The National Electrical Code began requiring 4-prong receptacles for 220-volt residential circuits in 2000, but it doesnt prohibit you from using your older dryer with a 3-prong cord.
Im guessing you have an existing 3 prong dryer outlet and want to continue using that but also tap off and use it to sometimes charge your Tesla. The Y-spliiter gives you an extra 14-30 outlet, but the extension cord you chose uses 14-50 connectors so it wont fit into the Y-splitter.
new jersey - If your home was built before 1996, the 220240-volt electrical outlet into which you plug your electric clothes dryer is most likely a 3-wire setup designed to accept a 3-prong plug. If your home is newer or the laundry room has been remodeled since 1996, on the other hand, the outlet is certainly a 4-wire setup designed to accept a 4-prong plug.

1 change the dryer cord to 4-prong NEMA 14-30, and remove the internal bootleg jumper from the dryer. 2 run a plain old 10 ground wire from the dryer socket junction box back to the panel or any other 10 ground wire going back to the panel... water heater, grounding electrode, metal conduit, whatevs. 3 change the socket to NEMA 14-30.
When moving a newer electric dryer into an older house, its not uncommon to find that the cord and plug included with the new dryer doesnt fit the 240-volt dryer outlet. Before the mid-1990s, most electric clothes dryers operated with three-prong plugs that fit into three-slot outlets, but since 1996, the electric code has required four-slot.
A 3-prong dryer cord was the standard for dryers prior to 2000. The National Electrical Code currently requires 4-prong dryer outlets in all new home construction. Existing homes may still use 3-prong outlets. The switch to a 4-prong outlet was due to a flaw in the 3-prong outlet design.

Apr 20, 2019018332I get to wire up a dryer outlet in an unfinished basement. I have to replace the old 3 prong with a new 4 prong for a new dryer. Seems simple enough. This outlet is designed to provide the dryer with both a 240V and 110V electricity supply. Dryers require the 240V supply to heat up, while the 110V supply is used to provide electricity to control the timers in the dryer. Over time outlets can become damaged or simply stop working for a number of reasons.

Mar 02, 2011018332The 4 prong requires two 120v legs 240v plus a neutral so that both 240 volt the dryer heating element and 120 volt the spin motor and pumps components can operate. Your circuit needs to have the neutral run from the panel since all the 3 prong outlet has is the 240 legs and a chassis ground.
Hey jchau4, I have both the NEMA 14-50 240V outlet which I had installed and an older dryer outlet. It is a 3-prong outlet, I think called a 10-30. I bought an adapter for the 10-30 and it works fine. My P85D automatically defaults to 24 amps when I use the dryer outlet. When I use the 14-50, I can get 40 amps.
Unfortunately, few people understand the difference between 3-prong and 4-prong dryer cords. Nearly all homes built before the mid 1990s featured either a 3-prong outlet or range outlet.
