The Memphis Rock lsquonrsquo Soul Museum is proud to have been developed in unique cooperation with the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition of the Rock lsquonrsquo Soul Museum is the first and only to have ever been developed by the Smithsonian in collaboration with another museum.
The museumrsquos story first began in 1990 as a traveling exhibition titled ldquoRock lsquonrsquo Soul Social Crossroadsrdquo. It was developed by the Smithsonian Institution to commemorate its 150th anniversary. Upon the completion of the traveling exhibition, memorabilia was collected and the Rock lsquonrsquo Soul Museum was established in Memphis, the birthplace of the blues, soul and rock lsquonrsquo roll.

The Old Rock Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill is one of the oldest in Manitowoc County and is remarkably well-preserved. The millrsquos period of usefulness began around 1825 and processed rock from the surrounding canyon and bedrock. The mill is located on top of a section of the Niagara Escarpment, the same formation that creates Niagara Falls in New York State. The Old Rock Mill is privately owned. Built in 1704 by Quaker Nathaniel Newlin, the Grist Mill produced flour for export to other colonies, the Caribbean, and around the world. The mill represents the intersection of industry, agriculture, and daily life in the 18th century. Experience the lives of those who lived, worked, and conducted business at the mill between 1740 and 1765. Guided tours of the working mill and millers house are offered daily year-round, and blacksmithing demonstrations take place on Saturdays from April through October.
